Why You Can Trust the COSMOS Organic Logo
Walk down any skincare aisle and you'll see the word "organic" everywhere. It's on labels, in ad copy, sprinkled through product names. But here's the honest truth: in most of the world, almost anyone can put the word "organic" on a bottle. There's no lock on that word.
The COSMOS ORGANIC logo is different. It's not a marketing flourish a brand adds to a label — it's a certification a brand has to earn, and keep earning, year after year. Here's what actually stands behind that little green signature, and why it means something when you see it on a Harmony Harvest product.
It's not the brand grading its own homework
The single biggest difference between a real certification and a vague organic claim is who's doing the checking. Harmony Harvest doesn't get to decide for itself that a product qualifies as COSMOS ORGANIC. That call is made by an independent, third-party Certification Body — a separate organisation with no financial stake in whether our products pass or fail.
These Certification Bodies aren't self-appointed either. To even be allowed to certify to the COSMOS standard, they have to be accredited against ISO/IEC 17065, the international standard that governs bodies certifying products, processes and services. An Accreditation Body then oversees them on an ongoing basis, and COSMOS itself can request to sit in on audits or ask for certification records directly. It's independent checks on the independent checkers.
Certification means paperwork and someone walking the floor

Getting the COSMOS ORGANIC signature isn't a matter of filling out a form and paying a fee. The standard requires both a full documentary review — every ingredient, every supplier, every process traced back to its source — and an on-site inspection. Someone from the Certification Body actually needs to see how a product is made, not just read about it.
That's paired with a genuine Quality Control System behind the scenes: full traceability of ingredients from raw material to finished bottle, separated manufacturing processes so organic ingredients can't be cross-contaminated with non-certified ones, and records kept at every stage. If a pesticide or contaminant is ever detected in an ingredient, the Certification Body has to be told, and they decide — not the brand — whether that product keeps its certified status.
The standard itself refuses to cut corners
Even before a product gets anywhere near an audit, COSMOS applies what's called the precautionary principle: if there's scientific evidence an ingredient or process could pose a health or environmental risk, it's simply not allowed, full stop. In practice, that rules out genetically modified ingredients, ionising irradiation, and most nanomaterials (with only a couple of narrow, well-studied exceptions like certain UV filters). Cosmetic products and ingredients certified under COSMOS also can't be tested on animals, by the brand or by anyone acting on the brand's behalf.
To actually carry the COSMOS ORGANIC name, a finished product also has to meet real, measurable thresholds — not just "contains some organic ingredients." At minimum, at least 20% of the total product must be organic (or 10% for rinse-off products, non-emulsified aqueous products, and mineral-heavy formulas), and at least 95% of the plant-based ingredients in the formula must be organically grown. Those numbers have to be disclosed on the label, not buried in fine print.
The logo itself is protected — which protects you
Even the way the logo can be used is tightly controlled. The signature has to appear alongside the certifying body's own seal, in specific fonts and colours, and it legally cannot be displayed on anything that isn't actually certified. COSMOS ORGANIC is a registered trademark, and using it to describe an uncertified product — or in a way that could mislead a shopper — is a violation of the standard, not just bad marketing practice.
What this means for you
When you pick up a Harmony Harvest product carrying the COSMOS ORGANIC signature, you're not just taking our word for it. You're relying on an independent auditor who inspected our processes, a certification body accountable to international standards, and a set of rules that were written to protect consumers first. We think that's worth more than any claim we could make about ourselves — and it's exactly why we chose to pursue it.
